Hierarchy of Trails Routes

Due to recent changes in the Local Authority structure in Cumbria, the information regarding the Hierarchy of Trails Routes is now managed by the Land Access and Recreation Association, or LARA, in collaboration with local authorities and representatives from user groups.

The aim of this guide is to encourage sustainable activity levels on these routes through voluntary restraint rather than relying solely on statutory measures like Traffic Regulation Orders. Concurrently, the usage and condition of these routes are under observation. In certain sensitive areas, routes may suffer significant erosion, and in such instances, recreational MPV users are encouraged to adhere to management strategies, which may include one-way systems for vehicles or a route permit system. Decision-making and monitoring processes actively involve user organisations.
